General Ebenezer Huntington was born December 26, 1754 in Norwich, Connecticut. He was a graduate from Yale
College in 1775 and after graduating enlisted in the American Revolution. He had two wives, the first being Sarah Isham,
who died 1793, and the second, Lucretia Mary McClellan. He had ten children and only one was from his first marriage.
His first experience in the army was in a volunteer company in Boston. Then he was appointed to first lieutenant in
a Connecticut regiment led by Col. Samuel Wyllis. Again in June 1776 he was promoted and received a captain’s commission
and then did the duties of brigade major under Gen. Parsons. Later on he was appointed deputy adjutant general to the
troops stationed on the North River under Maj. General Heath. During his time he also received the appointment of
deputy paymaster.
He was ordered to help reinforce the army in Newport, RI which was attacking the British army. Major Huntington
commanded until 1779 when he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Then he joined the main army to help Gen. Lincoln.
In 1783 at the end of the war he retired to private life and in 1792 he was appointed by Gov. Huntington to a general of
the State of Connecticut.
During the Revolutionary War General Huntington was thought to be one of the best disciplinarians in the army.
He was elected to be a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1810 and in 1817. He died June 17, 1834
in Norwich, CT.
